Storage Company Job Interview experience Interview Questions & Signs that you got the job

People often email with these questions so I'll give brief answers to them

1. Which companies are hiring now. What kind of openings are there.
Many storage companies (more than 40% are still hiring) but it may not be for entry level openings. Mid level, higher management is whats being hired right now. But give a good fight & u may get ur shot.
Several openings starting from consultant, support engineer,L2/L3, Developer, Quality, Implementation,Pre Sales lots of options are there. But check out your city specific job portal for the latest info. As far as I got the info through out US though there is a slump Storage pros are still in demand (those who have good years of experience & expertise).

2. How much is being paid? What is the pay package?

Will take a day to update on this since Im waiting for some inputs.

3. How are the interview process in these Storage Companies?
Expect & be ready for several technical interview rounds. Manager/ above rounds are nothing compared to the kind of bashing you'll recieve at tech rounds. So prepare well. Nothing to fear they treat you nice & gentle. But they want you to give the expected solutions/answers.

Dont expect any company hiring for not less than 3 tech rounds. Some companies do 7 rounds or more. Its a norm ,dont panic or act wierd when they ask you to wait a whole day before calling for a 40 min tech discussion.

4. Interview questions being asked in such Storage job interviews.
Interview is a very dynamic process, they mainly ask based on your experience, prior projects, strengths, tech accomplishments, Skillset they need for the opening.

Storage Training SAN NAS DAS Tutorial with Video

Storage Area Network (SAN) is a networked infrastructure connecting any server to any storage device over a high-speed network of interconnected Fibre Channel switches. These interconnected switches form the heart of the SAN — the fabric. By interconnecting multiple scalable switches together, it's possible to create SANs with several hundred ports.

Hardware and Software Components
SANs are composed of both hardware and software building blocks. Mouse over the components in the diagram or choose one from the list below to learn more about each one.

Before you can decide if Storage Area Networks (SANs) are the right technology choice for your organization, it's helpful to compare the other technology options, including:
Direct Attached Storage (DAS)
Network Attached Storage (NAS)
Direct Attached Storage (DAS)
Historically, the standard way of connecting hosts to storage devices has been direct, one-to-one SCSI attachments. As more and more storage and servers are added to meet demands, a DAS environment can cause a proliferation of server and storage islands, creating a huge management burden for administrators, as well as inefficient utilization of resources. Data sharing in these environments is also severely limited.

The Advantages of SAN over DAS
The most effective SANs provide a wide range of benefits and advantages over DAS, including:
More effective utilization of storage resources through centralized access
Simplified, centralized management of storage, reducing administrative workload to save time and money
Increased flexibility and scalability through any-to-any storage and server connectivity
Improved throughput performance to shorten data backup and recovery time
Reduced LAN congestion due to removal of backups from production network
Higher data availability for business continuance through a resilient network design
Excellent scalability and investment protection allowing you to easily add more storage as your business needs demand
Superior security for storage environments
Non-disruptive business operations when you add or re-deploy storage resources
Proven short- and long-term return on investment (ROI)

SAN

Network Attached Storage (NAS)
Unlike SANs that utilize a network of Fibre Channel switches, most NAS connections reside between workstation clients and the NAS file-sharing facility. These connections rely on the underlying corporate network infrastructure to function properly, which can lead to network congestion, particularly for larger data transfers. NAS solutions are typically configured as file-serving appliances accessed by workstations and servers through a network protocol such as TCP/IP and applications such as Network File System (NFS) or Common Internet File System (CIFS) for file access.

NAS storage scalability is often limited by the size of the self-contained NAS appliance enclosure. Adding another appliance is relatively easy, but sharing the combined contents is not. Because of these constraints, data backups in NAS environments typically are not centralized, and therefore are limited to direct attached devices (such as dedicated tape drives or libraries) or a network-based strategy where the appliance data is backed up to facilities over a corporate or dedicated LAN. Increasingly, NAS appliances are using SANs to solve problems associated with storage expansion, as well as data backup and recovery.

NAS does work well for organizations needing to deliver file data to multiple clients over a network. Because most NAS requests are for smaller amounts of data, data can be transferred over long distances efficiently.

This was a topic many were interested so I thought of collecting some facts from some of my known sources & compiled the below list - THIS IS NOT 100% CORRECT - DONT BASE UR DECISIONS ON THIS LIST - i would say that this is very vague & incorrect info.

This is for Software Engineers with around 2+ to 3+ years of experience working in Some of the top MNC companies listed below
NAME OF COMPANY::::SALARY IN INDIAN RUPEES(INR)
-------------------------------------------------
Accenture 2,00,000 to 4,50,000
TCS(Tata Consultancy Services) 3,00,000 to 5,50,000
CST(Cognizant Technology Solutions) 3,50,000 to 6,00,000
HP (Hewlett-packard) 3,00,000 to 4,50,000
Wipro 2,00,000 to 3,50,000
Infosys 2,00,000 to 3,00,000
IBM 2,00,000 to 4,00,000
EMC 2,50,000 to 4,50,000
Symphony Services 2,00,000 to 3,50,000
Adaptec 2,00,000 to 5,00,000
Intel 3,50,000 to 6,00,000

Sun Microsystems 3,00,000 to 5,00,000
Dell Software 2,00,000 to 5,00,000
Cisco 3,00,000 to 5,50,000
Tata Elxsi 2,00,000 to 4,50,000

All these companies have storage related products or services & will be hiring storage professionals. This is a very rough estimate & NOT to be considered the real salary structure of these companies - I DO NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OF ANY EVENTS OCCURING DUE TO PUBLISHING THIS INFO - this same info can be found in many forums & blogs.

Guys & Gals - dont ever worry about salary - its always a variable thing - its based on ur previous experience, mainly based on your performance in the interviews, based on your current salary , based on how urgent or important is the hiring in the company , how much value addition u bring to the new job & new company . So stop worrying about Salary & other packages & concentrate on improving your skillset, knowledge & experience.Any of the above listed company may pay low than whats said above or they may pay much much higher than whats mentioned here - its not always easy to say which is the highest salary paying company - as all companies keep increasing their pay packages. Also dont forget that companies may fire or terminate you if you fail in keeping upto their expectations - so rather than worrying about pay packages just focus on excelling in your performance & your present company or the first company whichever it might be that you join - itself may recognise your potential & pay you more than you expect. You can surely have the best & I always wish you the best in your Career - I know u will have a Great Career & its not always because of a Great Salary.

After receiving lots emails about salaries in India, I thought of gathering some more facts from aquintances in indian companies, recruiters and others who have been involved in IT placement sector. This is a very ROUGH estimate & not to be taken as serious data.Indian Salary are based on the concept of CTC ( Cost to Company ) and that makes it very hard to compare offers of any two IT companies. There are companies that include every detail including their contribution to PF(Provident Fund), and other companies that try to be fair by including only the real components that are being given to you.

There seems to be offers which include performance bonus in the overall offer with a clause that it is based on overall performance of the company. MNC's and some companies do not play these games, so you are better off taking their offers as the baseline. I tried to eliminate the performance components in the calculations below. Be wary of some companies that include variable components into CTC.

General Salary Ranges in some software companies are listed below.. [ Most companies fall into this range including Big companies like satyam, infosys, wipro ... ]. Numbers below are estimated CTC in terms of Salary Per Annum in INR(indian rupees) where 1 Lakh is 100,000INR.

Entry Level / Fresh Graduates [ 0 to 2 years ] : 2.5 to 4.8 Lakhs. I have seen this being as high as 6 Lakhs in Bangalore.
Junior Positions [ 1 to 4 years ] : 3.5 to 7 Lakhs
Mid level [ 3 to 6 years ] : 5 to 11 Lakhs
Sr Level [ 6 and Above, Project Manager, Lead etc ] : 9 to 17 Lakhs [ Too much competition for these jobs ]
Leadership [ Delivery, Operations, HR etc. 12+ Years ] : 15 to 25 Lakhs [ Internal candidates get the first preference here. ]
Sr. Leadership [ Operations Head, VP etc ]: 18 to 45 Lakhs
Executive Leadership [ SVP, COO of Biz Unit etc.] : 35 to 70 Lakhs
C Suite of Company [ Country Head, CEO, CFO, CTO ] : Heard of offers ranging from 2 to 7 Crores. This cannot be confirmed, but most recruiters seem to agree with this range.

Now to some spicy cases :

* Entry level offers in 2006 by Microsoft are around 9.5 Lakhs, Google at 12.5 Lakhs, Amazon at 7.5 Lakhs. They are only focusing on top grade schools including the IIT's. Interviews are hard to get through.
* Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Yahoo etc., dont seem to care about the money as long as the candidate is the right fit for their Organization. Some examples I heard of include 25+ Lakhs for testing lead, and around 35+ Lakhs for a Sr. Developer, 78+ Lakhs for a Director.
* MBA's of indian schools like IIM , ISB etc., are starting around 20 Lakhs and going all the way to 1.5 Crores. There were recent examples of 2 MBA grads rejecting a 1 Crore offer to pursue their own enterprise.
* Also companies like Oracle, CSC etc., offering beyond the above grid to attract mid and senior level talent. They have large plans for India and are unable to meet the internal demand.

Salary Package in Software Companies in India
